British expats who emigrated to the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand have been referred to as British expats, or simply Brits. Brits are often those who were born and raised in Britain and have now decided to make a home there. However, in recent years this term has been used to refer to any Brit who lives abroad. These include those who have moved abroad for a variety of reasons, including education, work, family reunions and retirement.
In some ways, being British abroad is much like being British at home. For example, one’s name is usually included in business addresses and correspondence, and in social and private correspondence as well. As well as using one’s name, it is also common to use the full name of the individual, rather than just his or her first initial, middle or last name. British expats are usually those who were born and raised in Britain and have chosen to make a home there. It is also common for them to be British citizens by birth, rather than just British nationals.
When deciding whether to relocate to a new country, it is often time to consider relocating to a different part of the world. Although the UK offers many opportunities for expatriates, many of the benefits of living in the U.S. or Australia may not be as easily accessible. Therefore, it may be a good idea to consider the alternative benefits of living in countries such as South Africa, the Middle East or the U.S. or Canada, where they offer a variety of benefits.
An expat who lives in a country where English is not the first language is often able to integrate into a country’s culture and way of life. This is especially so if they are already an English speaker. One may also be able to speak English in another country, which is particularly useful if they are involved in a job interview and require the ability to speak the language. An expat with a working knowledge of English can also provide important contacts in that country.
An expat may also find that he or she is able to find work in another country more easily if they speak English. Because of this, it may be in their best interest to learn some English in an English-speaking country before moving to a new country. The more a person knows about the country they are intending to live in, the easier it will be for them to adjust to its culture and way of life.
Brits are a valued presence in the U.S. and other parts of the world. A number of companies have programs designed to give Brits and expats training on how to communicate and deal with American or Australian culture. Because of this, it may be helpful for an expat to take part in some of these programs in order to gain skills which may be helpful in the future.
